The Alliance Art Gallery: A Clarification

I have been receiving inquiries about a new art gallery in town, The Alliance Art Gallery. I checked with the principals involved in this space and it's worth printing a clarification. The Alliance Art Gallery is a project of the Beacon Counseling Center, part of the Beacon Mental Health Clinic on Main Street. The gallery will be showing works in all media made only by their clients. Although located on Main Street, The gallery is only open to the mental health patients of clinic and is not open… Continue

Second Saturday Escape

Let's face it. None of us moved to Beacon for the excitement. We moved here for a simpler, small town existence removed from the hustle and bustle and stress of urban life. We wanted to live in a place where the only hoopla centered on debating the best hiking trails, how the tree planting on Main Street was going and how many eggs the chickens at our local farms were laying each day. But once a month, on second Saturdays, Beacon comes alive for visitors looking to sample the spirit of the good… Continue

Look For The Union Label

I really was inspired and by Pete's 90th party at the Garden and felt proud to have interests in the Beacon area. When Billy Bragg, a personal hero of mine, sang his a cappella version of L'Internationale it brought tears to my eyes. I thought of my Zayde, the old Labor Zionist that he was, getting up before each Passover Seder to lead the family in this anthem, much to the consternation of my parents. But I inherited my grandfather's social justice genes and have been a "Union Maid" my whole li… Continue

CV: I only joined this site in October and at first I thought all of these other CV accounts were dupe accounts of yours, but now I see they are other people aping you. The question is why. Some of your comments are perfectly good, but then there seems to be a strong emotional component to other comments of yours that I can see as the source of the angst in this forum towards you.

So here goes: you are perfectly welcome in the group "Public Discussion Forum". However, I want to keep a lid on the ongoing angst. So I deleted your post about "Candlelight Shopping Off to Bad Start" because of the negative emotional component to it. You are welcome to post this subject matter again, or any other subject matter you want, but it must be emotionally neutral, not condescending to Beaconites as the tone and words of "Candlelight Shopping Off to Bad Start" clearly was.

I've seen you post perfectly good subject matter/ comments before, so please continue doing so.

I also want to be completely transparent, not like I'm some weird shadowy censorship force, so every time I delete a post, I will make a note of what I've deleted and why on that person's homepage. That way, anyone can see what I've done and my reason for doing it, and develop their own opinion about the effectiveness/ ineffectiveness of my moderation.

Here is what I deleted. Anyone who disagrees with my decision is perfectly welcome to do so:

Candlelight Shopping Off to Bad Start

Posted by Charlene Vesuvius on December 4, 2009 at 6:24pm in Public Discussion Forum

I went out shopping Thursday evening, the posted start of Candlelight Shopping on Main Street. If there were other people out there, I didn't see them. Come on folks. Supporting Beacon doesn't just mean bellying up to the bar or getting your feed on at holiday parties. It means buying things. So start doing what the good folks at BACA are begging you to do. Shop locally. Let's do better next Thursday. I can't support this town alone.

Hello Charlene, I hesitate to spend too much time on websites such as this. But I do feel it's important if this is the only connection I have to some of the residents here in Beacon. As you are aware, I am a member of the Dutchess County Legislature and like the members of the Beacon City Council (excluding Mayor Gold) we are all up for election in November (some of us may exit in September though). I'm unsure of what type of forum you are looking to do in seeking information on the candidates. I'd be more than happy to send you the information regarding my beliefs and my voting record. I try not to spend too much time on "city issues" as that should be left to Mayor Gold and the council members. I attend many meetings of the Beacon City Council and feel I do a good job in keeping them "in the loop" when it comes to county issues - especially when we're talking about SALES TAX and MORTGAGE TAX payments coming from the County. I can also be reached on my cell phone at 845.214.7504 if you'd like to meet in person to discuss anything in greater detail.

Charlene, your post "Beacon in the May Issue of Chronogram" was deleted because I felt that it violated the BCN user guidelines. If you should re-post any of your content, refrain from commenting on the character of other members and general disrespect. Thank you.

Charlene you whacky nut job. OMG! (you just used this, and you made fun of me for WTF??)

Anywho, you need to go have that cuckoo clock for a brain of yours checked out by a professional. I think some of your cukoo birds have flown the coop, and you are becoming delusional with a super size portion of paranoia.

In no way was my comment to you threatening in anyway. I only suggested that it would be interesting to find out who you really are. Please re-read the post slowly, and make sure to really try to understand it. There are no threats of physical or any type of violence you high school drama queen. Jesus. I am going to read it now. Hold on - I'll be back. I am back. This is funny, because I posted my quick rant after you posted this about me:

"What if this Charlie Kelly really was the "Best" Beacon had to offer? What an amazing town we would have. I can picture visitors walking up from DIA just to see his favorite haunts.

"Come dear, its not that far a walk into town, and maybe if we're lucky we'll see that dashing Beaconite who likes to say WTF all the time. And we can shop where he shops, eat where he eats, and buy art where he buys art."

"Oh, we'll never be that lucky. Let's just take the next train back."

Then you go complain to Kelly about your safety after my post? Maybe I should have went to her first and complained that you were making fun of me and hurt my feelings.... and asked her to ban you or stop you from posting on this site. I feel like you want to run me over with a train or have tourist perform physical violence against, maybe have them peek through my windows and steal food from my plate - after reading that ill intentioned, spiteful, I'm gonna git you sucka! rant. Please don't threaten me with a silence of the lambs pit next or I will be calling the FBI. I mean it.

You post on here with your looney tune ramblings under your veil of internet anonymity. I would like to remove that veil. And researching someone on the internet is perfectly acceptable and legal. You see, once your looney tune ramblings hit the web... they are in the public domain. There is no difference from me researching you and your history, or trying to figure out what the Beastie Boys did last weekend. There is even a name for it... its called googling someone. Thats because we live in America, and not China, and even the thought of stopping someone from doing that is very... how did you put it.... "Maybe Giullianish."

Peace out. And keep it green. And make sure to recycle on recycling day.

Charlene - I know those kind of posts can be rattling. And you should be concerned. However, my experience here and on other (wink, wink) social sites is that these bullies are typically just talking; Trying to rattle you into leaving or at least backtracking into a quasi apology for your opinion (can you do that?) so they can claim some sort of adolescent victory and dance around their bed before being called to the table.

That said, you are wise to treat even the most absurd retorts with concern.

If you feel you are being threatened off-line, then I suggest you contact the police.

As far as "proper conduct," I can't keep someone from researching you, myself, or anyone else who participates in this site and I don't believe writing about this search activity constitutes a threat to your physical person. Online privacy is an issue for everyone in the Internet age, here are some resources to protect yourself.

Geez, you could use a friend huh? :)

I happen to enjoy your comments and your posts. I don't agree all the time; However I can stand to be ruffled and made to consider things every now and again. Others should try it. They might find that being so defensive causes them to miss the nuance of what is being said. Maybe.
