This afternoon my wife Claire revealed that, because she watches CNN while cooking dinner each evening, she is now officially unable to get out of her head Fishkill’s Plant Depot’s extraordinary jingle, which features a hammy Rat Pack-ish male singer crooning perhaps the worst lyrics ever written over the sort of big band arrangement with which Doc Severinsen used to torment Johnny Carson’s audience. The existing lyrics (from memory):
What a world of beauty
Nature busting out everywhere
It’s what we love; it’s our duty
We do it because we care.
Keep the place looking great
with all the colors of the rainbow
Nature at its best: Plant Depot
We propose to start an a cappella singing group to perform this remarkable song, with much finger-snapping, at events throughout Dutchess County. To become a member, you need only write a new verse, as Claire did:
Flowers, shrubs and bamboo
And all sorts of handy tools
We’re anxious -- you bet! — to serve you
Just south of Wappingers Falls
Have a stroll round our grounds
Located here on 9D
We’re your faithful friends and plant nursery
And as I did too:
From geraniums to fruit trees
We’ve got everything you crave
Bring your bassoon or flute, please
About us you’ll surely rave
Bug repellents and rakes
Hey, you won’t lose sleep; no!
We’re genuine, not fakes, at Plant Depot
Can we count on you, Charlene?
