this was a big deal in the 1800s, but nearly forgotten until some group revived the holiday last year, i don't even know who. i already posted this as an event, read more about evacuation day here:

i'm posting a discussion because what fascinates me is this old forgotten holiday seems intricately tied up with the identity of beacon. perhaps beacon next year should extend the revival of this dead holiday, to almost take ownership of the holiday with some events and some press, simply as a way to market beacon ny

some towns out west are known for certain cooking competitions, punxsutawney pa has groundhog day, saugerties has the garlic festival: some towns receive an economic boost with a local or national holiday of prominence

and so evacuation day is beacon's claim to fame. trumpet the holiday and ride it to local if not national prominence, to help bring tourists and fill our coffers
