on 11/30/09, kelly had to close the public discussion forums because of how unwieldy they were becoming in terms of off-topic posts and overly interpersonal conflict. here's her post on the issue:

http://www.beaconcitizen.com/profiles/blogs/public-discussion-forum...

i feel strongly that a completely public and open forum is necessary and healthy for beacon and this site. if there is no commons, there is no community. groups are fragmentary- necessary for smaller subsets of interest, but not a valid replacement for the overall commons where the most important stuff gets done (budget issues, the T.O.D., the mayor's posts, complaints, musings, crazy ideas, etc.)

of course, the tragedy of the commons is that a few drunks can ruin it for everyone else, so that's why it needs to be policed. a thankless time consuming task no one can blame kelly for not wanting to do

therefore, this new "Public Discussion Forum" group is open to everyone, and the subject matter is anything

however, i will be moderating the discussion topics and the posts underneath them ruthlessly and frequently, be forewarned. i may relax the moderation over time, i just don't know how this will play out. all i care about nuking is negative interpersonal conflict and subject matter not related to beacon

feedback about how heavy handed i am being/ not heavy handed enough/ too neutral/ not neutral enough/ too strict/ not strict enough, etc., please message me

hopefully this will work out

cheers,
ben royce

I asked this in the other place, but it's worth asking again:

Who are these drunks on BCN you are referring to? It would be helpful if we understood who you are talking about if your are going to continue this self-appointed mission of yours for all our benefit.

dude: i'm just trying to make a public forum work because i think its important. that's the genuine impulse and motivation. i've been involved in online communities before, and i've seen them go up and down and in various directions. it's an interest of mine: the evolution of online communities, a professional and hobby interest. i see this problem in the abstract. i'm a computer programmer in manhattan, banking backend, and i live in beacon. in previous lives i've programmed for online communities

if you sense any bias in anything i do, please speak up
